Kennedy Point Waiheke Merlot 2007

One of the smaller operations on Waiheke Island, Kennedy Point has a big reputation. It was established at the western entrance to Putiki Bay on the south-west side of the island by Susan McCarthy and Neal Kunimura in 1996. The ‘Kennedy Point' vineyard is planted to Bordeaux varietals and Syrah and is certified organic, the first so on Waiheke Island. The fruit is supplemented by grapes from the ‘Oakura' site, which also has Chardonnay planted, the ‘Whakarite Bay' vineyard which is mainly Merlot, and the ‘Jasa' vineyard with Syrah. Herb Friedli is the consultant winemaker and Heike Sonnenschein is the vineyard manager. While the ‘Reserve' bottlings of Syrah and the Bordeaux varieties are the flagships, the ‘regular' labels are seriously constructed as well.
