Kalex 2012 Riesling and Pinot Gris, 2011 Pinot Noir

29-Jan-2014
Kalex Wines is the wine estate of Alex Kaufman, a businessman and entrepreneur based in Aspen Colorado. He became enamoured with New Zealand on a visit in 1998, and afterwards began purchasing land with purpose of producing fine wine from Central Otago. Born in 1924 and around 90 years of age, Alex visits New Zealand regularly, but has Peter Waters, who has worked for the Kaufman family since 2006, resident in the country as general manager. The estate vines are supplemented with contract fruit, and the annual production is around 3,000 cases. The contracted winemaker is Theo Coles who is based in North Canterbury. Theo has made wine from Central Otago fruit for a decade. Here, I review the 2012 Riesling and Pinot Gris, the latter from Waipara fruit, and the 2011 Pinot Noir. www.kalexwines.com
