Lately, Stephen has been expanding his wine importing business, and the demands from that has meant rationalising his New Zealand winemaking operation, thus finishing with his value end Breaksea Sound and Stillwater Bay labels. His Discovery Point range is represented by a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. But he is maintaining his input with the Kairos wines. He has now made four vintages of these wines and the 2010s which are reviewed here are his second releases. It’s an ongoing and learning process for Stephen, but already is very pleased with the Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. The Pinot Noir is a more difficult proposition, he admits, but he will only release a wine if he is pleased with it. The word ‘Kairos’ is from ancient Greece and means ‘the supreme moment’, a moment in time in which something special happens, and it signifies Stephen Bennett MW’s philosophy behind the wines under this label. For the drinker, Stephen wishes the wines to "transform any occasion into a special moment”, and for him, they signify the styles that he personally prefers to drink to ensure a time of pleasure. The Kairos wines are made with the personal, hands-on involvement of Stephen, but also with the guidance of oenological consultants to ensure that the best winemaking techniques are observed and employed. Made from fruit grown to meet his criteria, and made with complexing interest and textural qualities in mind, the Kairos wines are designed to work with food.
