Johner Estate is the New Zealand wine growing venture of Karl Johner which complements his German Kaiserstuhl-based operation. Both estates are focussed on Pinot Noir, but as is often the case with such ventures in the New World, a range of varieties and styles is made from the Gladstone vineyard at the end of Dakins Road. Karl makes the wines in the European style to accompany food, with fine textures and relatively restrained flavour expression, rather than to win medals with overt fruitiness. Here, I review the 2015 ‘Sur Lie’ Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 2014 Wairarapa Pinot Noir. www.johner-estate.com
