Huia and Hunky Dory Marlborough Releases

Claire and Mike Allan have had nearly 25 years of Marlborough winemaking experience, setting up their Huia Vineyards operation in 1996 after Claire worked at Corbans and Lawson’s Dry Hills, and Mike at Cloudy Bay and Vavasour. The Huia estate wines are based on three vineyards. Two are in the Rapaura ‘Golden Mile’ district these being the 9 ha ‘Home’ block with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, planted in 1994 and1995, and over the road, the ‘Shipley’ block planted in 2005 to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The 15 ha ‘Winsome’ block is east of Blenheim in the Riverlands-Southern Valleys region. The vineyards are managed organically and biodynamically, the Allans attaining BioGro organic certification in 2012, with Huia a member of MANA, the Marlborough Natural Winegrowers group. Claire and Mike’s philosophy is to work in harmony with the environment, making wines that reflect the Marlborough region with the experience gained from overseas. Here, I review a selection of their new Huia and second tier Hunky Dory wines.
