Hopesgrove 2015 Viognier and Pinot Noir, and 2014 Chardonnay and Silver Lining Syrah

03-Oct-2016
Hopesgrove is the Paki Paki hillside vineyard venture of Pieter Koopman, who is a winemaker at the Hawke’s Bay Wine Company with Rod McDonald. Pieter acquired the 16.2 ha site and close-planted vines in the limestone-influenced soils in 2005. At present, Pieter has approx. 3 ha in vines, with 1.4 ha Syrah, 1.2 ha Chardonnay, and 0.2 ha Pinot Noir and Viognier, aiming to reach 4.5 ha in the next couple of years, with a target of 8 ha eventually. Pieter likes complex wines that are "big and complete” with accessibility as well as having the ability to cellar. The ‘Estate’ wines are his premium bottlings. In 2010 he made a barrel selection ‘Silver Lining’ Syrah predominantly from the last pick of the harvest. Here I review the second crop 2015 Viognier and first-release 2015 Pinot Noir, the fruit previously going to another label rosé, the 2014 Chardonnay, and the second release of a ‘Silver Lining’ Syrah from the 2014 vintage. www.hopesgrove.co.nz
