For 17 years, Hillview Estate has quietly produced excellent Pinot Noir, flying under the radar as a passion project of owner James Thyne. Grown for his own pleasure and shared with family and friends, this special wine has remained a well-kept secret.
The 14-hectare vineyard, nestled on Lake Ferry Road outside Martinborough, primarily produces Sauvignon Blanc for a local producer. However, a hidden gem lies within its 1.5 hectares of Pinot Noir vines, which are the sole source for the Hillview Estate Pinot Noir.
More than just a vineyard, Hillview Estate is a piece of New Zealand history. Situated on the southernmost slopes of the Martinborough district, this sacred land was once home to Wharewaka, one of the country's earliest sheep stations. Over 170 years of hard work and dedication have enriched the soil and connection to the land.
