Hawkshead is the Central Otago winegrowing venture of Denis Marshall and Ulrike Kurenbach. Their Gibbston Valley vineyard was planted to 3 ha of Pinot Noir, over 6 clones in 2001 and 2002. The Hawkshead range has been extended over time to include Pinot Gris with extra planting of their site in 2006, and with purchased Riesling and Pinot Noir fruit. Dean Shaw of the Central Otago Wine Co. is their contracted winemaker, who makes the Hawkshead Riesling, Pinot Gris, Central Otago Pinot Noir, a single vineyard Bannockburn Pinot Noir and the ‘First Vines’ Pinot Noir, the latter made from the oldest Gibbston Valley vines. Here, I review the new release 2014 Riesling and Bannockburn Pinot Noir, and the 2013 ‘First Vines’ Pinot Noir. www.hawksheadwine.com
