Andrew Greenhough and Jenny Wheeler are stalwarts of the Nelson winegrowing region, arriving in 1990, purchasing a 4 ha property in Hope with established vines to make wine. They produce some of Nelson’s very best wines, based on fruit from the original vineyard, the property on which has now expanded to 11 ha, as well as from the ‘Morison’ vineyard on the Waimea Plains, and the Barraud’ vineyard in the Upper Moutere. A small block of 40 y.o. Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc vines on the home ‘Hope’ vineyard is a treasured resource, and the production is bottled separately, the wines showing the benefits of vine age. The ‘Morison’ and ‘Barraud’ vineyards offer a further 8 ha of vines for the production of their highly sought-after wines. Both the ‘Hope’ and ‘Morison’ vineyards are certified BioGro organic. Here, I review a selection of 2015 and 2014 Nelson and ‘Hope Vineyard’ wines. The 2015 vintage was Andrew and Jenny’s 25th. One can see the increasing elegance and sophistication of wine style over the years. www.greenhough.co.nz
