Grasshopper Rock Central Otago Pinot Noir 2014

The Alexandra label of Grasshopper Rock brings much kudos to this Central Otago sub-region and reminds wine enthusiasts of the quality that can emanate from all of the districts that make up Central Otago. The Earnscleugh vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir clones 115, 667, 777, Abel. 5 and 114, and measures 7.8 ha. Mike Moffit tends the viticulture and Pete Bartle of VinPro makes the wine. The show results speak for themselves, and the wine is one of the best examples of Pinot Noir.

Phil Handford reports that 2014 was "one of our cooler, but kinder vintages”. The growing season experienced a warm start but the temperatures cooled down after Christmas. This period also saw reduced and atypical diurnal ranges, but ripening proceeded to provide "fruit in exceptional condition with excellent flavours and balance”. I review the new 2014 release here.
