Gladstone Vineyard 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir

29-Sep-2016
As the senior winery in Gladstone, in the greater Wairarapa, consumers look to Gladstone Vineyard as the benchmark. Christine Kernohan has been making consistently fine wine from the time that she and her husband David purchased the vineyard and winery in 1996. Their most important wines are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, reflecting the country and district’s plantings. Here, I review the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and 2014 Pinot Noir. The Kernohan’s winemaker Craig Fryett, who joined Gladstone Vineyard in August 2015, finished off these wines which were started by previous winemaker Alexis Moore. Of particular interest is a style change instituted by Christine and Craig with the Sauvignon Blanc which includes a greater proportion of barrel-ferment, moving it closer to the more sophisticated character of the ‘Sophie’s Choice’ Sauvignon Blanc. www.gladstonevineyard.co.nz
