Giesen 30 Staves and Small Batch Releases

From small beginnings in Burnham near Christchurch, in the early 1980s, the Giesen brothers Alex, Theo and Marcel have grown their family business to one of the most successful in New Zealand, based primarily in exporting Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. However, several years ago, the Giesens began a programme of strengthening their image of quality with the production of small-quantity high-end wines with sophistication and complexity. These have included single vineyard expressions under ‘The August’ and ‘The Fuder’ brands. The Giesens purchased the iconic ‘Clayvin’ vineyard in Marlborough at the start of 2015, and just recently the brand and stock of Ara Wines to broaden and deepen the portfolio. At the start of this year, the Giesens signed on Nikolai St George as their chief winemaker, Nikolai well-respected for his role in making Matua’s top-notch ‘Single Vineyard’ wines. The fruition of this work can be seen in recent wine show results, the latest notable success with the ‘Single Vineyard – Ridge Block’ Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013 awarded trophy for Champion Pinot Noir at the 2016 IWSC. Here, I review a selection of ‘small batch’ wines that show the work.
