Gibson Bridge – Renwick Boutique

Gibson Bridge is the boutique Marlborough vineyard of Howard and Julie Simmonds who established in 2004 a tiny 2 ha vineyard on the bank of Gibson Creek on the corner off Gee Street and the Nelson Highway just outside Renwick. The vineyard is close-planted, with over 5,500 vines, mainly to Pinot Gris, with smaller amounts of Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Malbec. Howard and Julie are hands-on with Julie running the award winning cellar door and Howard taking full responsibility of the viticulture. The first vintage was in 2006, the wines made by Gordon Ritchie at Indevin, with Dave Tyney taking over in 2013, using the Marlborough Vintners facility. The Simmonds craft tiny quantities of distinctive and individual wines. Here, I review three of the current releases.

  • Gibson Bridge ‘Reserve’ Marlborough Pinot Gris 2011
  • Gibson Bridge ‘Tresor Rouge’ Marlborough 2011
  • Gibson Bridge ‘Sweet 16’ Marlborough Botrytis Pinot Gris 2011
