Framingham 2013 Classic and 2014 Select Rieslings

Andrew Hedley and his team at Framingham Wines in Marlborough arguably make New Zealand’s finest Rieslings. This reputation is based on many years of outstanding releases of the ‘Classic’ Riesling, which has indeed turned out to one of this country’s classics, as well as the decadent Noble Riesling, which is consistently one of the best sweet wines made here. What cements Framingham’s place as the leader for me has been the recent releases of the funky ‘F-Series’ dry Riesling which offers wonderful complexity, and the sensational ranges of sweeter Rieslings, especially from the 2011 and 2012 vintages, which spanned the scale from medium-dry Kabinett style to the opulent Trockenbeerenauslese level expressions. Clearly Andrew understands the interaction between fruit expression, acidity, alcohol, pH as well as varying ripeness levels and the effect of botrytis with Riesling more so than most other winemakers. Here, I review the new 2013 ‘Classic’ and 2014 ‘Select’ Riesling releases.
