Foxes Island – The Voice of Experience

Experience counts for a great deal in making fine wine and John Belsham has a wealth of it from three decades of winemaking in this country and overseas. Working for Nobilos in 1982, John moved to head the Matua Valley winemaking then on to become the winemaker working with Marlborough's ‘first lady of wine' at Hunters. John was then instrumental in developing Rapaura Vintners, the first commercial and large scale contract winemaking facility in the region, establishing his own boutique Foxes Island label in 1992, based on a 20 ha Awatere vineyard supplemented with contract Wairau Valley fruit. Throughout this time, John's palate was honed by his principal roles in Cuisine magazine tastings and the Air New Zealand Wine Awards and Royal Easter Show judgings, as well as a host of consultancy roles.
