Forrest, The Doctors’ and TattyBogler 2015 Releases

John and Brigid Forrest established their vineyard in Renwick, Marlborough in 1988 to produce their first vintage in 1990. In 25 years, they have grown to add the innovative ‘The Doctors’ range, the super-premium ‘John Forrest Collection’ and ‘TattyBogler’ Otago wines, as well as make Hawke’s Bay wines from their partnership with the Newton family. While the number of bottlings is large, the quantities of most of the wines are limited, so they are in actuality small, specialist producers.

With the 2015 vintage, they start their second quarter-century of making wine. John Forrest notes it was a low cropping year, volumes 40% down on the large 2014 vintage and 20% lower than the long-term average. John also remarks that this meant a high quality harvest which came in early, picking over by the second week of April, before the wet Easter weather. The resultant wines "look impressive” with "great flavour and aromatics together with good palate weight”. Here, I review a selection of 2015 vintage wines, along with a 2013 Pinot Noir.
