The ‘Flying Sheep’ tier of Osawa Wines sits below the limited release ‘Winemaker’s Collection’ and sophisticated ‘Prestige Collection’ brands, designed to be clearly varietal, reflecting the cooler Kereru Road district of Maraekakaho in Hawke’s Bay. The wines have proven to be successful in their own right, showing the suitability of the Osawa vineyard for the aromatic varieties especially, as well as winemaker Rod McDonald’s sensitivity in handling the fruit. Here, I review the 2012 ‘Flying Sheep’ Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir. www.osawawines.co.nz
