Ellero is the winegrowing venture of John Montero and Roberta Manell Montero, Californians with considerable experience in winemaking and wineselling. They settled in Central Otago in 2000 establishing their 7-plus hectares of vines on their 16 ha property in the Pisa district just out of Cromwell. The vineyard named ‘Pisa Terrace’ is planted to Dijon clones, UCD5 and Abel Pinot Noir, with a small amount of Riesling on a steep, stony slope. John and Roberta tend to the viticulture, the vineyard certified BioGro organic in 2011. John makes the wine at the Terra Sancta facility. The Ellero label now has Pinot Noir and Riesling bottlings, only from estate, with the Gewurztraminer made in earlier years from contract fruit now discontinued.
