Elephant Hill Hawke’s Bay Rosé 2016

Tempranillo is the grape of choice for rosé wine at Elephant Hill. The earlier releases of rosé were based on Central Otago Pinot Noir, but winemaker Steve Skinner saw the attributes of Tempranillo grown in the cooler climate of New Zealand as being particularly suitable. The freshness of the acidity, restraint of flavours with subtle and balanced thirst-quenching phenolics are qualities that are very positive for the style. This was discussed with Steve during a visit at the end of 2014 (click here to see my report), and as proof, the 2014 Elephant Hill Rosé tasted then, made from 90% Tempranillo and 10% Syrah was a stepping stone in the development. www.elephanthill.co.nz
