Elephant Hill 2015 Reserve Chardonnay, Le Phant Rouge and 2013 Gimblett Syrah

The Weiss family established Elephant Hill in 2003 ith the planting of their 23.5 ha home vineyard at Te Awanga. The company now also owns sites in the Bridge Pa Triangle and the Gimblett Gravels which enables blending options as well as the potential for single vineyard, sub-regional bottlings. Winemaker Steve Skinner has been crafting increasingly polish and sophisticated wines, such that in my opinion the quality puts Elephant Hill into the top tier of Hawke’s Bay producers. Here, I review three new releases: the 2015 ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay, the accessible 2015 ‘Le Phant’ Rouge blend, and a limited release 2013 Syrah made solely from Gimblett Gravels fruit, rather than a blend of the company’s three vineyard sources. www.elephanthill.co.nz
