Elephant Hill 2013 Pinot Noir and Merlot/Malbec

02-Feb-2015
Based in the coastal Te Awanga region of Hawke’s Bay, Elephant Hill is a Hawke’s Bay focussed winegrower with vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels to supplement the home fruit of Te Awanga. A visit to Elephant Hill at the start of November last year previewed some sensational wines from the 2013 vintage in the works that demonstrated the benefits and choices of having different districts from which to draw grapes for blending. (Click here to see my report.) Winemaker Steve Skinner and his team are also full aware of how other varieties grown in other regions can offer style that is better expressive than in Hawke’s Bay, such as Pinot Noir in Central Otago. So Elephant Hill produces Central Otago wine too. Here, I review the 2013 releases of the Central Otago Pinot Noir, and the Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec. www.elephanthill.co.nz
