Established in 2001, Elephant Hill showcases the coastal-influenced style of the Te Awanga growing sub-region of Hawke’s Bay. The climate is cooler than the sites further inland and the diversity of soils types contributes to the differences. In the short time since the inaugural releases of 2007, Elephant Hill has become a highly recognised as a source of high quality wine, some of which already figures among the top flight of Hawke’s Bay. The modern restaurant has received much acclaim of late, and along with the cellar door service, Elephant Hill adds considerably to the importance of the Te Awanga district as a distinctive vignoble. Here I review two 2012 aromatic whites, a 2012 Rosé, and two reds. www.elephanthill.co.nz
