Owning vineyard land on Waiheke Island since 1988, the Dunleavy family are part of the fabric of the island’s wine history. The 1993 vintage of their ‘flagship’ Te Motu Bordeaux-varietal red was their foray into the super-premium market. The ‘Dunleavy’ brand was introduced as a second-tier wine with greater accessibility and approachability, both from a cost and drinking point of view. The Dunleavy ‘Single Vineyard’ wines are particularly notable. Here, I review the Dunleavy ‘The Strip’ Cabernet/Merlot 2014, the wine made from the family’s vines that border the old Waiheke Island airstrip. www.temotu.co.nz
