Dry River releases its tiny Martinborough production in two tranches every year, in Autumn and in Spring. Each release is an eclectic selection, but usually fascinating and of exceptionally high quality, as befits one of this country’s iconic wine producers. Winemaker Wilco Lam continues the work of Dr Neil McCallum, and Poppy and Shayne Hammond in "farming phenolics” to produce exceptional wines. He takes into account with extreme sensitivity the usual growing conditions such as temperature, heat, light, and rainfall, but also takes into account the effects of the Wairarapa winds which can also play a significant role in how the vines behave and grapes mature. These influences play a significant part in how he approaches vinification each vintage to achieve the ideal balance of his wines. Here, I review the 2016 Dry River Spring Release wines and have a preview of the 2015 Pinot Noir. The prices quoted are mail order prices. www.dryriver.co.nz
