Delta 2012 Pinot Noir and 2010 Hatter’s Hill Pinot Noir

The Delta Wine Co. of Marlborough was established in 2000 with the planting of 32 ha of mixed Dijon clone Pinot Noir in 2002 and 2003 on the hills and flats comprising the Delta Farm in the Waihopi Valley, the hillside vines accounting for 75% of the plantings. The brainchild of highly respected winemaker Matt Thomson and David Gleave MW, the project to make elegant, varietally expressive Pinot Noir, drew the attention and involvement of Neal Ibbotson and Ron Stewart. Two Pinot Noirs are made, the ‘Delta’ comprising two-thirds of the output, made from fruit from the flatter land blended with hillside fruit, and the ‘Hatter’s Hill’, made from selected parcels from the hillside. Here, I review the latest releases, the ‘Delta’ 2012 and ‘Hatter’s Hill’ 2010.
