Coney Wines – Martinborough

26-Jun-2013
Tim and Margaret Coney established Coney Wines in 1996 on a 6.5 ha property on Dry River Road just south of the Martinborough village. They have 2.2 ha of Pinot Noir, mainly 10/5 clone with some 5 and 13 Pommard clones, along with small amounts of 114, 115 and Abel. There is also 1.3 ha of Riesling and just under a hectare each of Pinot Gris and Syrah, these being recent additions, planted in 2003. The vineyard soils are ‘metal’ and deemed similar to that of the Martinborough Terrace, though the area has slightly later ripening than in town. Tim tends the vineyard and has made the wine on site since 2003, with daughter Lisa, a Roseworthy graduate, currently resident in Australia coming over for vintage. It is anticipated the end of this year will see Lisa involved in a full-time capacity. Margaret runs the popular ‘Trio Café’ as well as an events management and catering business from an integrated complex, where they also live. The names of the wines reflect the musical interest of the family. I review a selection of the current Coney range. www.coneywines.co.nz
