Colombo 2014 Martinborough Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
Baptist worked with Georg Fromm, the founder of Fromm Winery in Marlborough, at the Fromm winery in Switzerland before coming over the New Zealand to manage the Clayvin vineyard and other Fromm interests. In December 2013, Baptist and Carolyn took over the 16 y.o. Pinot Noir block of Gary Voss and Annette Atkins situated on Todds Road on the Martinborough Terrace, where they have built a small winery and cellar door.
The Colombo venture has a 1,000 case production to date, relatively wide ranging with fruit sources outside the district. The Sauvignon Blanc is from the ‘Pencarrow’ block of Palliser Estate, Chardonnay comes from Escarpment, the Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir Rosé from the ‘home’ block on Todds Road, and Syrah from William Murdoch in the Gimblett Gravels. Other bottlings have included Marlborough fruit, notably the 2013 ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir and Syrah wines. All of the vinification is now conducted at the winery in Martinborough. Baptist says "our strategy is to make very serious, high quality wines, but at a price that is still accessible”. Here, I review the 2014 Martinborough Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. www.colombo.co.nz

Colombo Te Muna Terraces Martinborough Chardonnay 2014Chardonnay from New Zealand - Wairarapa & WellingtonReview Date : 12-Sep-2015Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, pale on rim. The nose is fresh and tightly bound with finely concentrated, aromas of white stonefruit and citrus fruits along with subtle nuances of nutty oak and flinty, minerally detail. This is slender in presentation, but grows in intensity with aeration. Medium-full bodied and elegantly concentrated, the palate features vibrant and bright fruit flavours of white and yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits, unfolding nutty oak and flinty lees detail. The mouthfeel is well-balanced with fresh, lacy acidity, soft barrel-ferment creaminess and very refined phenolic textures. Colombo Martinborough Terrace Martinborough Pinot Noir 2014Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Wairarapa & WellingtonReview Date : 12-Sep-2015Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues.
