Coal Pit ‘Tiwha’ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2014

10-Nov-2015
The Coal Pit vineyard is situated on a historical coal pit site in the Gibbston Valley in Central Otago. The first vines in the 12 ha north-north east facing vineyard were 4.0 ha of Pinot Noir and 2.0 ha of Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1994 with a further 1.5 ha of Pinot Noir in 2000. Rosie Dunphy purchased Coal Pit in 2001 and commissioned the building of a 30 tonne winery on site for 2007 to ensure the processing of the fruit in the best condition. She has Gary Crabbe as her viticulturist, and Gary’s wife Lynn Horton is her winemaker. Here, I review the new release 2014 ‘Tiwha’ Pinot Noir, named as a tribute to Rosie’s father. www.coalpitwine.com
