Clearwater Cove is a value tier for the Yealands Wine Group. The wines are made by Jeff Fyfe, mainly from Marlborough fruit, with grapes from Hawke’s Bay and other regions. Most of the Clearwater Cove wine is exported, but there is a good presence in the domestic market. Here, I review the 2017 Pinot Gris. www.clearwatercove.co.nz

Bright pale straw colour, near colourless on the rim. The nose is softly fresh with good depth of perfumed pear and white stonefruit aromas intermingling with exotic white florals, hints of honeysuckle and nuances of fermentation esters. Dry to taste and medium-bodied. the palate has gently sweet and rich flavours of pears and white stonefruits, along with lifted floral and honeysuckle detail. The mouthfeel possesses soft, lacy acidity, and the wine flows along a light, phenolic line that lends some drying grip. The palate has good linearity and carries to a lingering, textured finish of pears and florals. This is a fresh, dry Pinot Gris with aromatic pear, stonefruit and floral flavours on a softly fresh palate with some grip and texture. Match with Asian fare over the next 2+ years. Awatere Valley fruit cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 3.7 g/L RS. 16.5+/20 Mar 2018 RRP $13.95
