Clearview 2016 Gewurz and ‘Karaka’, 2015 Merlot and ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay and Syrah

15-Dec-2016
Tim Turvey and Helma van den Berg’s enthusiasm for wine shows in the large and diverse range of quality wines they make under the Clearview Estate label. Owning their Te Awanga coastal Hawke’s Bay vineyard for three decades, they have grown their reputation not only for the wines, but the complete wine experience a visitor can receive at the characterful cellar door, and lunch restaurant. Founders and proprietors, Tim and Helma continue to run all aspects of the business together. For the first 16 years, Tim made the wines by himself, but has had a winemaking right hand for the last 14 years. Matt Kirby with Tim for two vintages, and Rob Bregmen have picked up from previous assistant winemaker Barry Riwai, and we are beginning to see greater depth, detail and sophistication in the wines, as well as innovation, from the result of Tim’s accumulating experience and the new ideas of his younger assistant winemakers. Here, I review the 2016 Coastal Gewurztraminer and ‘Karaka’ orange wine, the 2015 ‘Cape Kidnappers’ Merlot and ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay and Syrah wines. www.clearviewestate.co.nz
