Clark Estate – Successful Awatere Aromatic Whites

02-Apr-2012
Clark Estate, a relatively small family business in the upper Awatere Valley has captured the limelight recently with its show successes, most recently the Trophy for Champion Riesling at the 2012 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards. Headed by Peter and Jane Clark, with son Simon as viticulturist and winemaker who has spent time in the Mosel with Ernie Loosen, and daughter Sarah responsible for sales and marketing, Clark Estate and its associated brand Boreham Wood is a hands-on operation. They planted 8 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc in 1998, and expanded with 2.4 ha of Pinot Gris and 0.8 ha of Riesling planted in 2006. The wines are made at the Marlborough Vintners facility. The signpost on the Boreham Wood label represents the Clark's journey from the town in southern Hertfordshire, just north of London to the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. Here are the 2011 releases. They are an excellent range of aromatic wines showing a good understanding of the styles. www.clarkestate.com
