Charles Wiffen Marlborough Pinot Gris 2014

The aromatic white wines of Charles Wiffen are the stars of the range, and the Pinot Gris sits in comfortably with the Riesling and Gewurztraminer having won its fair share of top awards. Winemaker James Rowan at West Brook puts considerable energy in getting the balance right, and along with Charles and Sandi Wiffen’s wishes, has been quietly making the wine drier to suit the market demands. With the 2014, the fruit was picked earlier and James settled on 10 g/L residual sugar, considerably lower than the 17-18 g/L of earlier releases, though the 2013 was approx. 6 g/L. Also with the 2014, the wine has been handled totally in stainless-steel, forgoing the small proportion fermented an aged in barrel as seen in other years. James thinks the 2014 shows better each time he looks at the wine! Here is my review of it.
