Charles Wiffen 2011 Pinot Gris, and 2012 Chardonnay and Merlot

The Charles Wiffen range of wines seems to have become significantly more popular over the last few years, as vintages are now being released at a shorter time from harvest. It’s a fine balance to achieve a situation where the wines have some bottle age to be able to show their true potential, as recommended by the winemakers, and where vintages on offer are older, appearing if they look too old or unsaleable, as suggested by some retailers and FMCG marketers. I see the Charles Wiffen wines at a good place in this regard, as they now release the 2012 Chardonnay and Merlot, and 2011 Pinot Gris. The 2011 Pinot Gris just took gold at the N.Z. International Wine Show, indicating it is in a good developmental phase. These are a strong set of releases showing the maturity of vines and thoughtful winemaking by James Rowan. Here are my reviews of these wines.
