Chard Farm ‘The Tiger’ and ‘The Viper’ Pinot Noir 2009

04-Apr-2013

As one of the pioneer labels of Central Otago, Chard Farm holds a special place for all New Zealand wine aficionados. Its location in the Gibbston Valley is reached by way of a precarious and spectacular driveway cut into the bluffs of the Kawarau river. It is worth making the effort to taste the wines, especially the Pinot Noir wines, which make up approximately 70% of the winery‘s production. Winemaker and director Rob Hay has John Wallace as his right hand man making a very strong range from this variety, and the emphasis is on elegance. The Chard Farm Pinot Noir pinnacles are the single vineyard wines ‘The Tiger’ and ‘The Viper’. The wines are subtly different and have been increasingly showing their personalities. I review the 2009 wines with a little time in bottle now. www.chardfarm.co.nz
