The Chapel Hill winery in the McLaren Vale takes its name from the historic ironstone chapel built on the property in 1865. Professor Tom Nelson restored the dilapidated chapel in the 1970s and established a vineyard there in 1972. The Gerrard family built a new 1,000 tonne capacity winery in 1994, and in 2000, the estate was acquired by the Swiss-based family of Thomas Schmidheiny. Chapel Hill owns 44 ha of vines and supplements this with contract fruit. Michael Fragos is CEO and chief winemaker, and Bryn Richards winemaker with Rachel Steer the viticulturist. The wines include the flagship ‘Reserves’ and ‘Block’ bottlings and the value ‘The Parson’ range. www.chapelhillwine.com.au The wines are distributed by Hancocks. www.hancocks.co.nz
