Catherine’s Block 2015 Pinot Gris and 2014 Pinot Noir, and 2014 Wild River Pinot Noir

29-Mar-2016
The Mount Brown Estates wine venture of Tony Rutherford and his daughter Catherine Keith is based on three vineyards in the Waipara Valley, the original ‘Mount Brown’ block with 25 ha, the ‘Limeloader’ block established in 2007, and the ‘Weka Gravels’ vineyard, acquired in 2012. Three brands of wine are made, the most accessible being ‘Wild River’, ‘Mount Brown’ which includes the ‘Grand Reserve’ bottlings, and the limited-release ‘Catherine’s Block’ wines. Andrew Florance is the vineyard manager, with the company since 2011, and the winemaker is Frank Manifold, producing the wines since 2010, but full-time with Mount Brown since 2013. Here, I review the Catherine’s Block 2015 Pinot Gris and 2014 Pinot Noir, and Wild River 2014 Pinot Noir. www.mountbrown.co.nz
