Catalina Sounds 2013 Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Sound of White

27-Nov-2013
Within the portfolio of Australian John Valmorbida’s Endeavour Vineyards, the Catalina Sounds label has become a strong one based on the excellent fruit from estate vineyards and contract supply. Peter Jackson, formerly of Whitehaven and Te Whare Ra took over the winemaking reins after the 2011 vintage, and he has enjoyed learning about and working with the fruit from the different vineyard sources. 2013 was a vintage where he gave considerable thought to the styles of the wines based on what the vineyards offer. Pinot Gris is a favourite variety which he learnt vinification lessons during his time in Alsace. Drawing out the ferment and the inclusion of a warm barrel-ferment portion is designed to add to the mouthfeel in the new wine. With Sauvignon Blanc, in 2013, Catalina Sounds has introduced a more ‘interesting’ style of wine, the ‘Sound of White’, with greater inputs and texture, to complement the more classical Marlborough expression of the variety. My reviews of the new wines follow. They are more refined than ever, with subtle detail and interest carefully built into them. www.catalinasounds.co.nz
