Calmel & Joseph – Languedoc-Roussillon Specialists

Founding their business in 1995, Laurent Calmel and Jerome Joseph are negociants specialising in the wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in central southern France reaching the Mediterranean coast. Instead of buying and blending finished wine, they are involved from the very start of their wines' lives by working with their 20 growers on the viticultural regimes, vinifying them and seeing their elevage on site. A contemporary style of freshness and authenticity to their origins is paramount in their philosophy of winemaking, and the annual production is limited at just over 15,000 cases total across the different appellations and tiers of wine made. The wines are either AOP (appellation d’origine protogee) or IGP (indication geographique protogee), and come under five ranges: ‘Les Terroirs’, ‘Les Crus’, ‘Les Cuvees Rares’, ‘Villa Blanche’ and ‘ Les Langudoc’. Here, I review three wines from ‘Les Terroirs’. The wines are true to their regionality, showing ripeness and robustness, and will be well-suited to the winter months. They are available in New Zealand from the distributors Wine Direct, and online at
