Cable Bay Waiheke 2013 Chardonnay and 2011 L.E. Malbec Merlot Syrah

21-Jul-2014
Under the ownership of Neill Culley and Loukas Petrou, Cable Bay has consolidated its status as a New Zealand-wide producer with fruit from its home base on Waiheke Island supplemented by grapes from 28 ha of estate vineyards in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough and fruit from Central Otago. The Waiheke Island winery, cellar door, restaurant, and function and conference centre takes pride of place, producing the breadth of Cable Bay’s portfolio, with Pinot Gris, Viognier, Chardonnay, Syrah and the Bordeaux varieties. Here, I review the new 2013 Chardonnay, the vintage an excellent one on Waiheke Island, and a ‘Limited Edition’ Malbec/Merlot/Syrah blend, from a more challenging year, but one where the Malbec performed very well, this wine including a proportion of Syrah to what would usually form the basis for the ‘Five Hills’ wine. www.cablebay.co.nz
