Brookfields 2016 and 2015 Estate, and 2015 Reserve Releases

Brookfields Vineyards in Hawke’s Bay was originally established by the Ellis family in 1937, but its modern history began in 1977 when it was purchased by Peter Robertson under advice from the legendary Tom McDonald while Peter worked as a chemist at McWilliams Wines. At the time it was one of the pioneering boutique vineyard operations in the district. Peter, his wife Sharon and family personally run the business, taking in around 200 tonnes of grapes from their four regional vineyard sources of the ‘Home’ block at Meeanee, the Ohiti vineyard, and from vineyards in the Tuki Tuki and their ‘Hillside’ vineyard in Bridge Pa, to produce 8,000 to 10,000 cases of wine annually. Peter and his assistant winemaker Carl Nicolson make the wines at their characterful but very efficient winery on site. White the ‘Estate’ wines are bottled under contract, Peter and Carl bottle the ‘Reserve’ wines at the winery, these wines accounting for up to 20% of the production at most. Peter continually keeps abreast of the developing Hawke’s Bay style and varieties, but he is best known for the top-end ‘Reserve’ expressions of Chardonnay, Syrah and the Bordeaux reds, the flagship being the ‘Gold Label’ ‘Reserve Vintage’ Cabernet Merlot, these counted by many as among the best of their styles in Hawke’s Bay. The wines possess a true artisanal feel to them. Here, I review a broad selection of the ‘Estate’ wines and the top five ‘Reserve’ bottlings.
