Brookfields 2013 ‘Hillside’ Syrah and ‘Reserve Vintage Cabernet Merlot

Brookfields is one of the original Hawke’s Bay boutique wineries in the modern era, owned by Peter and Sharon Robertson since 1977. The vineyard and winery exudes a quiet charm and presents a traditional face, but the wines are thoroughly contemporary, the fruit coming from vineyards at Meeanee, Ohiti, the Tuki Tuki and the Bridge Pa districts. Peter and his assistant winemaker Carl Nicolson manage on average 200 tonnes of fruit annually making a broad and deep range of wines. In the whites, there is Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Chardonnay, with variations on winemaker input, the ‘Marshall Bank’ Chardonnay seen as the flagship white. A rosé and dessert wine are also made. The reds offer variations on Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the ‘Hillside’ Syrah particularly notable, and the top wine being the ‘Gold Label’ Reserve Bordeaux Blend. I visited Brookfields at the start of November (click here to see my report), and acquired the 2013 ‘Hillside’ Syrah and ‘Reserve Vintage’ Cabernet/Merlot to review. The wines come from a vintage that Peter sees as one of the best. Here are my reviews of the wines.
