Brightwater Vineyards ‘Lord Rutherford’ Sauvignon Blanc 2015 and Pinot Noir 2014

Brightwater Vineyards is the wine venture and life of Gary and Valley Neale who returned from overseas in 1992 to establish 10 ha of vineyards on an ancient river terrace overlooking the village of Brightwater on the Hope Plains, just south of Nelson. The first wine releases were from the 1999 vintage and the range encompasses Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, a Rosé, Pinot Noir and Merlot all made from estate fruit. Dale Springer has tended the vineyards since 2002 and Tony Southgate is the winemaker, with Brightwater Vineyards since 2004. The ‘Brightwater Vineyards’ label is supported by the flagship ‘Lord Rutherford’ tier, named after Ernst Rutherford, ‘Father of the Atom’ who was born in Brightwater. The wines regularly win top awards at wine shows. Here, I review the 2015 ‘Lord Rutherford’ Barrique Sauvignon Blanc and 2014 Nelson Pinot Noir, the latter wine a trophy winner.
