Brightwater Vineyards 2016 Rosé and Pinot Gris, and 2014 Lord Rutherford Chardonnay

Brightwater Vineyards was established in 1992 when Gary and Valley Neale returned from overseas to plant 10 ha of vines on an ancient river terrace overlooking the village of Brightwater on the Hope Plains, just south of Nelson. They released their first wines from the 1999 vintage. In 2003 they built their own winery and in 2007 launched their ‘Lord Rutherford’ flagship tier. The Brightwater Vineyards wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, a Rosé, Pinot Noir and Merlot all made from estate fruit. Dale Springer has tended the vineyards since 2002 and Tony Southgate is the winemaker, with Brightwater Vineyards since 2004. The wines perform with distinction on the show circuit and add much to the Nelson quality wine scene. Here, I review the 2016 ‘Sophie’s Kiss’ Rosé and Pinot Gris, and 2014 ‘Lord Rutherford’ Barrique Chardonnay.
