Brightwater Vineyards 2013 Sauvignons and 2012 Pinot Noir

Gary and Valley Neale established their 10 ha of vineyards on an ancient river terrace near the village of Brightwater on the Hope Plains in Nelson in 1993. The began releasing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Merlot wines under their own Brightwater Vineyards label from the 1999 vintage, and built their own winery in 2003. The wines are made from estate fruit and from sites managed by them, and they are released under the ‘Brightwater Vineyards’ and ‘Lord Rutherford’ tiers. Dale Springer is the vineyard manager with Brightwater Vineyards since 2002, and Tony Southgate the winemaker with the Neales since 2004. The wines, Chardonnay in particular, have received major awards recently. Here, I review the new release 2013 Sauvignon Blancs and the 2012 Pinot Noir.
