Brennan Central Otago 2016, 215 and 2014 Whites, and 2015 and 2016 Reds

09-Jan-2017
The Brennan family established Brennan Wines in 1994 supplying contract fruit from their Gibbston vineyard to Peregrine. Their first own label wines were from 2006, and the family under Sean Brennan have expanded the vineyard to 13 ha and introduced new styles and varieties, making several points of difference to the expected Central Otago fare. Pinot Noir accounts for 80% of the vines, with plantings of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Riesling and Tempranillo. Sean was joined by Sarah Burton from Cloudy Bay in 2014 (who is partly on maternity leave), and Lou Coutts, an Englishwoman winemaker in February last year. There is a new winery in the works, and the future at Brennan Wines looks very interesting. Here, I review a selection of white and red wines from 2016 to 2014, including wines under the very successful ‘B2’ secondary label. The ‘B2’ tier is being phased out for the whites, but will remain for the Pinot Noir. www.brennanwines.com
