Black Quail Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012

19-Jan-2015
The ‘Black Quail Estate’ vineyard of Rod and Mirani Keillor has proven to be an excellent one. Situated at the base of Mt Difficulty at the end of Felton Road, the wines have consistently won top awards. I certainly enjoyed the 2009 (click here to see my review) and the 2011 vintage (click here to see my review). The Keillors have 7.17 ha of Pinot Noir vines with 49% in clone 10/5, 29% clone 115, 10% each in clones 5 and 6, with the rest to 667 and 114. Gary Crabbe has the viticultural responsibilities and Francis Hutt of Carrick is the winemaker. With 2012 being a hot growing season, Francis picked early to avoid any overripe characters and high alcohol levels. I review the wine here. www.blackquail.co.nz
