Black Estate New Rosé, Riesling Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Releases

One must take note of Black Estate in the Waipara Valley. The Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines are proving to be some of the best in the region. It appears the Naish family have come to realise the potential of their three vineyard sources over the past several vintages. The heart of Black Estate is the home vineyard at the juncture of Waipara and Omihi, and has the old vine Mendoza Chardonnay and 10/5 Pinot Noir material, now supplemented with plantings of newer clones. The ‘Spye Farm’ vineyards in Omihi have been a source of fruit for Black Estate for some time now, and their lease over the vines is proving to be a happy one for supplying distinctive grapes. Thirdly the former Daniel Schuster ‘Netherwood’ vineyard has become an important one for Black Estate, further extending the potential for adding to the mix. Winemaker Nicholas Brown is adventurous in his winemaking and is keen to see the expression of the sites come through in the wines. I believe we are seeing that happening in his quality wines. Here, I review a selection of the current and new releases, a 2013 rosé, Riesling and Chardonnay from 2012, and 2011 vintages of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
