Black Estate 2015 Riesling and Chardonnays, and 2014 Pinot Noirs

20-Apr-2016
The family owned Black Estate winegrowing operation of the Naish family is one of the most exciting in the Waipara Valley producing classy, characterful, complex and contemporary wines. With 24 ha of vines over three vineyards on clay limestone soils, Black Estate has the ability to demonstrate terroir in their wines, particularly with Pinot Noir. The ‘Home’ vineyard, or original estate is 6 km north-east of the Waipara Junction and was established in 1994, and has 12 ha of vines planted. The vineyard at Spye is labelled ‘Damsteep’ by the Naish family, and is located at the foot of the Omihi saddle. The hillside vineyard was planted in 1999, and 7 ha of the 16 ha property is in vines. The latest acquisition for the Naish family was the ‘Netherwood’ vineyard, sited in the foothills of the Teviotdale ranges, originally planted by Russell Black and Danny Schuster in 1986, and it has 5 ha of vines.

All three vineyards in the Omihi district offer differences in soils and aspect, as well as plant material, these all contributing to the diverse styles of the wines. The three vineyards are in organic conversion with BioGro. The Naish family have consolidated their labelling and nomenclature to emphasise their exploration and expression of each of these sites. Here, I review the 2015 Riesling and two Chardonnays, and 2014 Pinot Noirs from these three vineyards, the Pinot Noir wines coming from a challenging vintage.  Winemaker Nicholas Brown has done an excellent job with these wines. www.blackestate.co.nz
