Black Barn is an artisan winegrower, located just 5 minutes from the village of Havelock North in Hawke's Bay Wine Country. But that’s not all they’re known for – Black Barn also offers luxury retreats, wedding and event venues, a summer growers’ market, a well-reputed Bistro and an amphitheatre that seats 2,000 for concerts and world-class events.
Their north-facing site has 10 ha of estate vineyards. It’s situated on the elevated lower slope of the Te Mata Hills and provides stunning views with a warm and sheltered micro-climate. All their wines are produced from their estate-grown fruit and many are available only through the cellar door and website.
Dave McKee is responsible for the viticulture and winemaking at Black Barn, who are known for their high-quality Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux varietal wines, with forays into other varieties and styles. Dave has been in Hawke's Bay since 1991, first spending nine years at Church Road Winery prior to joining Black Barn Vineyards in 2001.
I have recently tasted their newly released Sauvignon Blanc 2020 and Rosé 2021. See my reviews below:
FEATURED WINES IN THIS REVIEW
Black Barn Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Hawke’s BaySauvignon Blanc from New Zealand - Hawke's BayReview Date : 25-Jun-2021Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is full of intense aromas of tropical guava, gooseberries, lime melded with lovage, chive and fresh-cut grass. Medium-bodied, good intensity aromas of lime, gooseberries and guava have a good core, unfolding spicy herbs of chive, lovage and herbaceous grassiness. There's a creaminess on the palate that provides balance to the mouthwatering acidity, flow smoothly with chalky, fine-textured phenolic to a refreshing finish. This is a pleasing, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc with ripe fruit on a fine-textured palate. Match with pork croquettes and crumbed fish over the next 3 years. The fruit was lightly crushed, settled for 24 hours, inoculated with aromatic yeast strain with a portion fermented in old French oak. 13.5% alc. 18/20 pts (90 pts) June 2021 RRP $25

The nose is generously full, packed with aromas of berry mix, peaches and delicate white spice. Medium-bodied, berry mix and peaches interweave grapefruit, along with zesty spice and white pepper linger to a dry finish. The palate is smooth and vibrant, flows with good energy and lively acidity. This is a juicy, smooth-flowing rosé with plenty of fruit and vibrancy. Serve as an aperitif or match with parma ham wrapped melon for the next 2-3 years. Cool-fermented to 13.5% alc. 18/20 pts (90 pts) June 2021 RRP $25
