Bishops Head and Rockface Waipara Releases

30-Sep-2014
Established in 2006, Bishops Head is a boutique winery on Mackenzie Road in the Waipara Valley with 19 ha of vines on a 25 ha property. The managing director is Peter Saunders and winemaker is Paul Hewett. Both have extensive winemaking experience in New Zealand and overseas, and they oversee all the viticultural work and winemaking. The varieties planted are Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris. Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir. The ‘Bishops Head’ wines are made in a European style with greater textures and complexities, whilst the ‘Rockface’ wines are designed to be accessible, showing varietal character. The names ‘Bishops Head’ and ‘Rockface’ refer to a distinctive limestone rockface in the Waipara Gorge. Here, I review a selection of new releases under both labels. www.bishopshead.co.nz
